What's your health worth?

How much is your health worth?

It’s hard to put a price tag on something as important as our health, but each of us does by the choices we make, the habits we keep and the priorities we set.

It’s no surprise that those of us who have chosen careers in health care tend to place a high value on our health. Besides regular chiropractic care, we attend to countless other things to protect and advance our health. (Curious what they are? Ask us at your next visit.) Since we’d like to see everyone benefit from a better functioning nervous system, when we find out that someone has discontinued their care because they can’t afford it, we’re concerned. Are our fees out of line?

Turns out it’s rarely about money. Usually, it’s just a matter of priorities. Finances become a convenient excuse. Each of us has been given the free will to prioritize our health in the way we see fit. True, most of us take our health for granted until we lose it, but that may be just human nature.

If other issues in your life require more attention than your health, we understand. No need to make excuses, feel embarrassed or even self-conscious. You won’t get a scolding, a sermon or even a raised eyebrow.

We’re servants. It’s your body, your health and your future. You’re the boss. We’re not interested in judging you or second-guessing your decisions. Simply put, our job is to offer you the finest chiropractic care possible. And it’s your job to decide how much, of it you want. Quite simple really. No guilt. No shame. No problem.

Protection from constant complainers!

Do You Know a Complainer?

A common refrain we hear from patients is that they know someone who complains about their health problem and won’t take any action. Often these same health issues respond wonderfully to chiropractic care, but when the suggestion is made to try chiropractic, the offer is rebuffed.

And the complaining continues...

I only know of three reasons why people are inclined to reject chiropractic and choose to complain instead:

Fear. Trying something new that doesn’t involve medication can be a stretch for some people. We understand. Ask, and we can supply you with a brochure or two that explains today’s chiropractic that often reduces apprehension. Even better, invite them to accompany you on your next visit so they can see for themselves.

Ignorance. With a limited knowledge of chiropractic, many are inclined to dismiss chiropractic as merely a treatment for the spine. But because the focus of chiropractic care is the integrity of the nervous system (which controls everything), we’ve seen many types of non-spinal health issues resolve as well. Ask for one of our handouts that shows the relationships among the spine, nervous system and all the tissues of the body.

Secondary gain. While less common, from time to time we encounter those who actually enjoy being sick! They may enjoy the attention they receive or the reduced workload, responsibilities or expectations that are extended to them due to their health challenge. Remind them of the things they used to enjoy. Paint a picture of the possibilities that await them by taking action.

You may need to make the call to arrange an appointment for them. If they’re not interested, consider getting a good set of earplugs!

Looking for health...

Looking For Health in All the Wrong Places

Have you ever lost your keys, misplaced your glasses or mislaid the TV remote? Bet you tried to think back to the last time you had your keys, wore your glasses or used the remote. Knowing where to look is the fastest way to find something. Same with recovering your health. We’re able to help so many people because we know where to look.

One of the key tenets of chiropractic is that health is our natural state. Health is normal. When someone isn’t healthy, our first inclination is to find out what could be interfering with this natural ability. Rather than focusing on the particular symptom, we look for what might be the underlying cause of the symptom.

Nine times out of ten, we find a disturbance in the controlling or regulating impulses of the nervous system. When communications between the brain and the body are impaired, this situation can produce a myriad of conditions that go by thousands of different names. The most common source of compromise in brain/body communication is from the moving bones of the spine. Individual segments covering the information superhighway of your nervous system can “lock up” and stress nearby nerves. Or more precisely, subluxation.

Headaches? Look to the spine. Acid reflux? Look to the spine. Inflamed tonsils? Look to the spine. Asthma? Look to the spine. Irritable bowel? You get the idea.

Does that mean chiropractic can cure everything? Of course not. But if you want to regain your health, it’s a great place to start looking!

Just the Cost of Doing Business?

I watch with horror as drug companies spend huge amounts marketing their “wares” directly to the public. Not content with reaching MDs through the conventional professional channels, drug makers are using television, magazines and other media to encourage the end consumer to “Ask your doctor if (drug name) is right for you.”

Sadly, it must be working.

Don't roll the dice with your health!

Yet, what you rarely hear about are the thousands of people who permanently pay the “cost of doing business” as a result. Consider some of the terms that are used to minimize the resulting death toll:

Adverse reaction

Reaction to a drug that is different from the desired reaction and is detrimental to the recipient.

Side effect

An unwanted, often unspecific, effect of a drug that is not part of the intended activity.

Drug interaction

The result of drugs reacting with each other, often in ways that are unexpected or potentially harmful.

Medical error

An inappropriate treatment, or the right treatment that was performed incorrectly.

Iatrogenic

A state of ill health or an adverse effect caused by a treatment, usually due to mistakes made in treatment.

I mention this to expose a double standard. Those who are critical of chiropractic attempt to frighten the public. Their main tactic is to suggest that chiropractic is unsafe or that neck adjustments can lead to a stroke.

It’s just not true.

Chiropractic is so safe that no “warning label” is necessary. Chiropractic is so safe that it doesn’t need a page of fine-print disclaimers. Chiropractic is so safe that even newborns and the elderly can benefit. Chiropractic is so safe that the side effects are, well… positive effects!
